Directed by John Ford

Yakima Canutt	stunt co-ordinator (uncredited)

This is textbook film-making by the only cinematic poet Hollywood ever produced.

Owing its origins to Guy de Maupassant's story Boule de Suif, the plot is simplicity itself, but with just a few deft touches screenwriter Dudley Nichols created a coachload of credible characters whose vices and virtues are not as apparent as they initially seem.

Ford's first venture into Monument Valley was also his first picture starring. John Wayne, the man with whom he would transform the very nature of the western.

From Yakima Canutt's breathtaking stunts (although Wayne did most of his own) to the brilliant support playing, everything about this picture is perfection.
