BETTY BOOP'S RISE TO FAME.

(1934 - d. David Fleischer)
Cartoon p.c. Max Fleischer,
l.p. Betty Boop, Max Fleischer.

A young reporter is interviewing Max Fleischer, "How many drawings do you make for each film" he asks, "12 to 14,000 answers Max, and at the reporters request, draws Betty and asks her to illustrate three extracts from her films, these being "Stopping The Show" (1932) "Bamboo Island" (1932) and "The Old Man Of The Mountain" (1933).

In "Stopping The Show" Betty imitates various stars including Fanny Brice and Maurice Chevalier.

In "Bamboo Island" she dances in a grass skirt, and in "Old Man Of The Mountain" she does a song and dance with the old man - voiced by Cab Calloway.

Quite interesting compilation, but better material was available to Fleischer when he put this together.

The print is not that good, and seems to have been made off the old Collectors Club negative.

There is no end title, and the closing music is cut off after only a few frames - better to have removed it entirely, very sloppy, at £14.95 I expect something better than that.

If you wish to have just one Betty Boop cartoon in your collection, then this is worth considering.

Animation buffs should get it for Max Fleischers appearance and the interesting opening and closing scenes.

This title is no longer available new on 8mm. It originally came from Collectors Club who released mainly older subjects, and was re-released by PM Films, both long since gone.

The above review was printed in Super Eight Film Review issue 31 from July 1995.
