Following the bouncing ball, and led by diverting cartoon characters, movie audiences of the thirties sang their troubles away. Despite the number of such cartoons that flooded our theaters, surviving copies of the origin . now as scarce as the Proverbial hen's tooth. Blackhawk Films offers a true screen rarity, the only screen-song by Fleischer Studios still in circulation, IN MY MERRY OLDSMOBILE.
The sotto-voice off-color mumblings of the villain in IN MY MERRY OLDSMOBILE and slightly risqué visuals are typical of the Fleischer style that kept thirties' audiences wondering how for he would go.
Betty Boop, with her "boop-boopi-be-doop", Popeye, Olive Oil - all were products of Fleischer's drawing boards. so when the fair heroine of IN MY MERRY OLDSMOBILE" shows a striking similarity to Betty Boop, with a touch of Olive 0il, It's more than coincidence. It's a family resemblance, Fleischer family. Clever animation, good sound, and a catchy tune made IN MY MERRY OLDSMOBILE a hit in 1932.
