1935 d. Ben Sharpsteen
Garage mechanics, Mickey, Goofy and Donald wrestle with gangster Peg Leg Pete's squeaking roadster. The fault turns out to be a trapped cricket but by the time our valiant band discover this they have already wrecked the car. Peg Leg is in a nasty mood.
This ( the last Mickey Mouse release in B&W) is the perfect vehicle (no pun
intended) for Peg leg Pete as the mobster who threatening the gang. As he leaves he draws
his hand across his throat warning he will be back in one hour: the car had better be
ready, or else!. The magazine "Time" (1954) described Pete as "a monstrous
mingling of common house cat and Long John Silver".
All the characters have some good business to perform. This is a classic one-reeler that is certainty not short on invention. Donald is the earlier tatter, thinner, longer beaked version but as cantankerous as ever.
Our review copy was on colour stock. The definition and sound were very good indeed which is just as well since this is one of my all-time Disney shorts. My only comment about the review print is that it was dark. This has since been rectified and release prints wilt be that much lighter.
