THE ABYSS/COCOON.

I love a good trailer reel and here are two crackers from Derann both very satisfying both very varied.

On the first reel two Science Fiction subject are treated very differently by their different directors and the two trailers reflect this contrast.

Abyss is a lavish underwater adventure written and directed by James Cameron, the same man who made my favourite space thriller Aliens (available in full from Derann and superb in every aspect). It begins with Cameron's film crew at work before going into clips from the finished film.

Like the trailer for Aliens, this plays the old trick of cropping the length of each succeeding shot as the trailer progresses so that the excitement and tension increases.

It works superbly well just as it did in the Aliens trailer but here the visuals really are super-spectacular and a perfect souvenir of the film.

Cocoon is a much gentler affair and in my estimation a more satisfying film. The trailer is shorter but again like the "Abyss" trailer contains sufficient scenes to whet the appetite.

Like all the best trailers these prove a great souvenir if you've seen the film and a great incentive to see it if you haven't.

The sound is a little boomy but is easily rectified by a spin on the tone controls.
